Summary of PACE 2009 Summer Camp, China’s Environment, Economy and Society.

July 12-15, 2009

Kunming, Yunnan

Following the successful experience of 2006 Qingdao Summer Camp, The Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE), sponsored by the China Academy for Environment Planning and Renmin University of China, has organised with Center for Rural Development Studies of Yunnan University the second PACE summer camp in Kunming, Yunnan during July 13-15, 2009. This event has attracted more then 80 participants from universities, governmental offices and other research institutes specialized in environmental studies in both China and foreign countries.

Mr. Xia Guang, the director of the Policy Research Centre for Environment and Economy (PRCEE) of Ministry of Environment Protection, Dr. Jinnan Wang (represented by Mr. Cheng Wei Xue and Dr. Dong Zhan Feng) of Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning, Dr. Hua Wang, honored Director of PACE and Senior Environmental Economist from the World Bank, Professor Zou Ji of Renming University of China, Professor Bi Jun of Nanjing University,  Professor Zhu Dajian of Tongji University, Professor Shen Manhong of Zhejian University and vice principal of Zhejiang Science and Techonology University, Professor Chen Yongqin David and Professor Kin-Che Lam of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professot Li Chuan-Zhong of Uppsala University of Sweden and Professor Jie He from Universite de Sherbrooke, Canada have given speeches and discussed their perceptives on the current status of China’s academic and policy-oriented environmental economics researches and potential progress in the future.

During the three days’ program, over 50 participants, mostly postgraduate students, presented their recent research works. Their topics cover the possibility and potential to apply the emission trading regime to China’s pollution abatement objectives, environmental valuation applied on China’s environmental and natural resources, climate change and China, environmental problems related to China’s urbanisation, transport, energy and water consumption, international or regional environmental problems and their management from China’s angle, ecology and the strategies and managements for China’s environment and natural resource protection, etc. The participants received constructive suggestions and comments from the resource people from most prestige universities in China and foreign countries.

The objective of the summer camp is to create a relaxing and easy environment to encourage direct academic communication between the new-generation of the student researchers on China’s environmental problems and the well-established professors and experts. Therefore besides the paper presentation sessions during the daytime, we also organised side-events such as half-day tour to Rock Forest and BBQ which largely reinforced the informal communication between participants.

Compared to the 2006 summer camp, significant improvement in the quality of the research presented during the summer camp has been noticed by most of the professors and researchers who have participated both 2006 and 2009 summer camp. We expect to see even greater progress in the research in environmental and natural resource economics in China in our next summer camp!
