Wuhan International Conference on Environment
The Wuhan International Conference on Environment was held in Wuhan International Convention and Exhibition Center on October 16-18, 2009. The conference was co-organized by the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council, Hubei Provincial People’s Government, Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, and Sino-U.S. Cooperative Center for Environmental and Economic Development (SUCCEED), and supported by more than ten organizations in which PACE and Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning are among the key supporting institutions. More than one hundred domestic and international experts from within China and abroad participated in the conference. At the meeting, presentations and discussion were centered on the following topics: Public Health and Environmental Disease; Environmental Pollution and Protection; Renewable Energy and Eco-city Development; Air and Water Quality and Climate Change; Environment, City and Society.
At the opening plenary in the afternoon of Oct. 16, Mr. Li Guobin, Deputy Director-General of the Hubei provincial environmental protection Bureau and Dr. Kevin Teichman, Acting Assistant Administrator of U.S. EPA made the opening remarks. In the following keynote Speech session Prof. Heid Foth of Martin Luther University, Germany, Prof. Makram Suidan of University of Cincinnati, U.S., Prof. Fredrick Semazzi of North Carolina State University, U.S., and Dr. Peter Penning, President and CEO of Inogen® Environmental Alliance, the Netherlands had made presentations respectively on EU’s new chemical legislation REACH (registration, evaluation and authorization of chemicals), Fate of sex hormones during wastewater treatment, Pathways for integrating research into global climate information services, and Cleaner production: saving money while saving the environment.
On Oct. 17, PACE and the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning co-organized the presentation and discussion under topic C (renewable energy and eco-city development) and topic E (green economy, environmentally friendly society and sustainable policy). PACE Chairman Dr. Wang Jinnan and PACE President Dr.
Gong Yuyang chaired the meeting. About twenty experts from U.S.A., UK and China made presentations on new energy, low carbon economy, circular economy, and sustainable development and had an active discussion with the participants of the session.
Dr. Wang Jinnan made a presentation of “The development of China’s green economy” in which Dr. Wang talked about the current state and development trend of China’s green economy, strategy and policies for promoting China’s green economy, and other hot issues with regard to green economy.
