Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Forum Successfully Held in Shanghai
The first session of the Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Forum (GCSEF) was successfully held in the new Shanghai International Exposition Center on May 6-7 in conjunction with 2010 Annual Academic Conference of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES), and the Consultation Meeting on Environmental Protection Plan in the 12th Five-Year Period. The first GCSEF was co-hosted by Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES), Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE) and Department of Textile and Environmental Engineering of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The GCSEF and Annual Academic Conference of CSES were attended by more than 1500 participants from all over China (both inland China and Taiwan) and abroad. Mr. Zhou Jian, Vice Minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), and Mr. Wang Yuqing, Chairman of CSES and PACE advisor were among the honorable guests present at the opening ceremony and appeared on the podium. Eight experts made keynote presentations at the plenary session in the morning and afternoon of May 6, including Dr. Wang Jinnan, PACE chairman and deputy president of CAEP who made a presentation on Innovation and Reform of Environment Economic Policy in the New Era.
From the afternoon of May 6 through May 7, nine thematic sessions on - Environmental Planning; Low-carbon Economy and Science and Technology Innovation; Environmental Economy, Environmental Management and EIA; Water Pollution Prevention and Control; Solid Waste Prevention and Control; Environmental Remediation; Control Technologies and Management of SO2, NOx, Mercury, Fine Particulates Pollutions; Environmental Monitoring and Early Warning; Technologies for the Prevention and Control of Lake and River Basin Pollutions – were conducted. PACE Chairman Dr. Wang Jinnan made a presentation of Consideration on the Total Amount Control of Pollutant Emission in the 12th Five-Year Plan Period. Dr. Gong Yuyang, PACE president chaired the thematic session on Low-carbon Economy and Science and Technology Innovation.
In the evening of May 6, a welcome banquet was sponsored by Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE) and hosted by Mr. Wang Yuqing, Chairman of CSES at the Yalong International Hotel for overseas Chinese participants in the first session of the Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Forum. Mr. Wang Yuqing spoke highly of the idea of creating the forum and expressed his full support to the launching of the forum. At the banquet PACE Chairman Dr. Wang Jinan made a brief introduction of PACE to the guests and said that PACE would like to serve the forum as an effective platform for view exchange in the field of environmental protection for overseas Chinese environmental scientists.
Immediately after the dinner, the launching ceremony of the Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Forum was hosted by PACE and held which was attended by about 100 people including more than 50 overseas participants. At the launching ceremony, Dr. Fang Danqun, Director of U.S. Western Institute for Environmental Sciences, and Mr. Hou Xuesong, Assistant Secretary-General of CSES briefed the audience on the process of forum preparation, the nature, goal, principles, and modus operandi of the forum, and the preliminarily planned activities for the coming two years. Dr. Fang said that as of May 6, 2010, 18 overseas organizations and more than 20 domestic organizations have joined the forum with PACE being among the first sponsors and the co-organizers of the first session of the forum. PACE president Dr. Gong Yuyang spoke at the launching ceremony on behalf of PACE Chair Dr. Wang Jinnan, expressing the full support to and active participation in the forum and highlighting the areas to which the overseas environmental experts could make contribution during the 12th Five-Year Plan period.
The first session of the Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Protection Forum was directed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Chinese Association of Science and Technology, and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), co-hosted by Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES), Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE) and Department of Textile and Environmental Engineering of CAE. The first session of the Global Chinese Scientists Environmental Protection Forum was co-sponsored by following overseas organizations: Southern California Chinese American Environmental Protection Association (SCCAEPA), Overseas Chinese environmental Engineers and Scientists Association (OCEESA), Sino-Ecologists Association Overseas (Sino-Eco), International Society for Electrostatic Precipitation (ISESP),Chinese American Environmental Professionals Association (CAEPA),Chinese Environmental Scholars and Professionals Network (CESPN), North American Chinese Geotechnical Engineers Association (NACGEA),International Chinese Transportation Professionals Association – Southern California Chapter (ICTPA-SCC), Chinese American Professionals Society(CAPS), Environment & Public Health Network for Chinese Students and Scholars (ENCSS), Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST-LA), Chiao Tung/Jiaotong University Alumni Association of Southern California(CTUAA-SC),University of Science and Technology of China Alumni Association of Southern California (USTCAA-SC), Blue Oak Global Holdings, etc.
